"The Night Before Christma: A C is for Cthulhu Holiday Tale," is the latest Cthulhu-themed picture book from the, "C is for Cthulhu," creative team. With writer Jason Ciaramella and illustrator Joshua Janes this board book is designed to appeal to all ages and is a fun example of how we sometimes take horror and make it cute and funny. We as a society seem to take the creepiest and most nightmarish ideas and make them a little less intense and even more interesting by giving them a cute and funny vibe. It makes horror a little easier to ingest, in the same manner that Freddy Kruger is a bit less scream-inducing when he cracks a joke, to give an example.
Something can have frightening origins but if you create a cute or funny version kids can love it just as much as the hair-rasing incarnation but not have nightmares from it! The C is for Cthulhu team clearly is aware of this as they've raised over $500,000 on Kickstarter with other books featuring their cuddly take on Cthulhu. I had a chance to read this latest publication with a digital advance copy and it is great fun. There is a Kickstarter campaign going for it right now that ends this Saturday. It has already raised a bunch more than the goal so go ahead and back it here if you want a fun holiday book about Cthulhu!
